I think about painting—or, to put it differently, about smearing.

For if I am a painter, I can say that the most important thing in the art of the brush is the handling of painterly matter (not, by any means, of corpses). What interests me is paint as mud—that grime born of broken tones. Smearing with this little "mud," this "gloop," this oily muck is the quintessence of what I do, or at least what I am striving towards.

I strive to wipe out, blot over, plaster up, smear over, and soil the surface of a canvas—or any other plane.

Colour interests me; more than that, colour fascinates me. But not the pretty kind, not the lovely kind, not the ingratiating kind, not the aestheticising kind, not the kind that is sophisticated only in the most superficial sense, merely to seduce the potential recipient, viewer, and peeping spectator with its "prettiness," its "niceness." My colour is the "rejected" colour: the one people would rather not look at, the "ugly" one, dirty, weathered, rotten, muddled, exhausted, discarded, impoverished. It is the colour of mud, dirt, dust, rags; beaten down, gone sour. Its existence is harsh, indigestible to most people. It is an accursed colour; it couldn't give a damn whether you like it. This colour denies the very notion of ease in painting. It does not impose itself, nor does it ask for anything. It is trash. That trash interests me—that filth, that shitty mess born of pigments mixed together.

When you see faces, bodies, or fragments of them, it is only because you want to. They are merely a pretext for smearing those empty surfaces with the colours of poverty, dirt, decay, and cellars.

When you see so-called "abstraction," that too is only because you want to. It is merely a pretext for more smearing, daubing, slathering, and kneading with colour—colour gone awry, colour that has betrayed itself, colour warped, degenerate, downtrodden, bleached, and dulled.

I smear, therefore I am.

Mój kolor to kolor ‘odrzucony’, niechętnie oglądany, ‘brzydki’, brudny, zwietrzały, przegniły, przemieszany, wymęczony, odrzucony, biedny. To kolor błota, brudu, kurzu, szmaty, stłamszony, skiszony.
